stormy weather
Weather-wise, this has been an interesting year. So far, within a month, two major storms have interrupted our lives. The first flooded our house, and the second left us without running water and electricity for three days. Though having over an inch of water covering our floor maybe looks and sounds worse, the lack of running water and electricity was actually more inconvenient and trying for our nerves. We are thankful, though, that God protected us during the deluge. Because we were home when our house flooded, we were able to rescue our electrical equipment and furniture and stop it before it got worse. And during the storm in which we lost water and electricity, God protected our house (and our neighbor's house) from getting flattened by the fifty foot tree that fell in our neighbor's yard. And when the tree ripped up the natural gas line as it fell and our house filled with gas, God kept it from exploding or suffocating us. Truly, He is our shelter in the storm.
Apart from the crazy weather, our year is off to a good start. We recently opened up the Sunday morning Bible study that meets in our house to the neighborhood. Initially, it had only been for the Grothe family and us, as we planned, prayed, and waited for the right time to start inviting other people. The first Sunday we opened it up, two other people came! Our hope is that God will eventually grow this Bible study into a fully-functioning church that ministers to the people of City Bell (the town where we live).
Along with the launch of the City Bell Bible study, classes at the Bible Institute of La Plata are starting up again. It is an exciting time, because this will be the first semester we are using our own building instead of the facilities of a local church in La Plata. This is good, because it allows people from other churches and denominations to feel more comfortable in participating. As a result, we already have three other churches sending people to be trained now! This semester George will be teaching the Old Testament survey class.
Emily will probably sit in on George's class in order to practice her Spanish, which continues to improve daily. One thing that has helped is the relationships she has formed with several Argentines. There are two girls that she meets with regularly, and two others that stop by the house fairly often. Besides her Spanish studies, Emily continues to train in the Bible Training Center for Leaders, which she is attending through the internet.
On a different note, as you probably remember, we had a puppy last year that was sick with distemper and died within about 2 months after we bought her. Well, some of our sweet friends pooled together enough money as a gift for us to be able to buy a pure bred dog that came pre-vaccinated and with a much better chance of survival. Several weeks ago, we went to a local breeder and bought German Shepherd puppy. Her name is Zelda (German for "famous warrior"), she's just over two months old, and she eats everything. We are thankful for the generosity of our friends, which is a reminder of God's tender benevolence.
